It’s a battle-tested Tampa Bay Tech heading to postseason - Tampa Bay Times

TAMPA — After playing through one of the most difficult schedules in Class 7A, overcoming a rash of injuries at key positions and enduring a three-game losing streak, Tampa Bay Tech is healthy and clicking at just the right time.

Junior quarterback David Wright threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns as Tampa Bay Tech (7-3) cruised into the playoffs with a dominant 42-7 win over Jefferson (5-5) Friday night. The Titans were hot from the start, opening the game with an eight-play, 64-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown on a wide receiver sweep by Armone Harris.

In the second quarter, it was Wright finding senior Daunte Harris (two receptions, 76 yards) over the middle. The senior speedster outraced a pair of Dragon defenders on a 65-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead going into the half.

In the third quarter, Tech found itself backed up to their its 5-yard line when Wright hit wide receiver Bobby Moore on a slant. With nothing but grass in front of him, the senior raced 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Titans a commanding 21-0 lead.

“Before the play, I saw the corner come up. When we hiked it, he backed up and I saw the middle of the field open. I knew what was going to happen” said Moore.

Coach Jayson Roberts agreed. “That opened up the floodgates.”

The fourth quarter began with Wright again finding Moore, this time climbing the ladder in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard score and 28-0 lead. Moore finished with five catches for 133 yards on the night.

The Dragons got on the board in the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Tre Simmons scored up the middle from 10 yards out on a quarterback sneak, cutting the lead to 28-7. Tech responded when Wright threw his final touchdown of the night, rolling right and finding sophomore Greg Gaines on a 34-yard strike.

“It was a hitch, but I saw him (Wright) roll out and we practice the scramble drill. The outside receive goes up the field, and the corner bit down,” Gaines said.

It wasn’t just the Titan offense that played well. Tech’s defense pressured Simmons all evening, with junior defensive ends Henry Hughes and Komlon Tchoulou each chipping in multiple sacks and Kenny Robinson recovering a fumble for a touchdown.

After a challenging and successful regular season, Roberts was proud of his team’s resilience.

‘We had a tough schedule and had some injuries as we hit the toughest part of it. We had Bloomingdale, Armwood and Gaither back to back to back," he said. “Those are good teams and they deserved to win. The past few weeks have been about getting healthy and refocusing and getting our complete team back. We knew if we could we would have the opportunity to get into the playoffs and maybe see a few of those teams again. That’s been a motivation for us.”

Playoff pairings will be announced Sunday morning.
